Deborah Weir, Kilauea
In the winter of 2020, when Cycles was just starting, Mount Kilauea was fuming and spewing on the Big Island of Hawaii. As a part-time Hawaiian, I keep my eye on these things that make the state such a powerful place to be. So making my first 12 Cycles piece was a no-brainer: honor Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of elemental fire! I layered the reds and oranges first then created the grays and blacks of both glassy and molten lava from painted and formed Tyvek. Hand stitching is my metier so there’s a bit of that holding is all together. I debated whether to name it on the reverse but decided against that as I wanted the responding artists to have complete freedom to express their
interpretation of the work.
