kathleen cunningham, Prayer
As someone who is exploring how to bring my unique photographic vision to art cloth, this project was a wonderful opportunity and something of a challenge. The piece that began my cycle is a moment in time, expressing my excitement and wish to inspire eleven accomplished art cloth makers.
John O’Donohue’s writing has inspired me over the years and I often return to his book To Bless the Space Between Us. It seemed fitting to offer the group his prayer “For Work” as a starting point.
. . . May the sacredness of your work bring light and renewal to those
who work with you
and to those who see and receive your work. . . .
I wrote his full poem on a piece of paper and placed it in a pocket on my square. The square is padded to emphasize the softness of the pattern and the sentiment. Each response in my cycle is about light, color, texture, and possibilities. They are different and subtle, but connected to the original work. What a gift!
Each piece is finished separately and then hung on clear plexiglass bars, organized by color. Visual prayers for work and gratitude.
