Maria Billings, X Marks the Spot
As a non-native English speaker, I often noted the expression “X Marks the Spot.” During the pandemic in 2020, marking the spot often referred to a spike of sick people in a city - or of involuntary separation of family members.
But the expression can also refer to pleasant memories: the spot where you saw a loved one for the first time, the location of a wonderful meal with friends, or in fairy tales and pirate stories: the goal of a treasure hunt.
I tried to visualize these complex connotations in “X Marks the Spot.” The silk is painted in warm colors, the hand-stitching bold and cheerful, encouraging positive, uplifting associations to “X Marks the Spot.”
Material: Silk, acrylics paint, cotton yarn
Techniques: Hand-painted, hand-stitched
